Introduction
The Park Road Prince of Wales Colliery site is located on the edge of the historic market
town of Pontefract approximately 1.25km north of the town centre and is situated within
the Pontefract North Ward of Wakefield. The site represents a tremendous opportunity to
develop a landmark project in a high profile location as an urban extension to the north of
the Pontefract urban area, within easy walking distance of Pontefract Town Centre and in a high profile location close to Junction 32 of the M62 Motorway and adjacent to Pontefract Park Racecourse.
The overall site is split in two parts: firstly the former colliery pit yard site (the subject of an ES and outline planning application) and secondly, the former spoil heap site (which is the subject of a separate ES and detailed planning application). Both sites are split by the railway which runs between Monkhill and Castleford. Both sites are within walking distance of four rail stations (Tanshelf, Monkhill, Glasshoughton and Baghill) and is served by frequent bus services on Park Road (A639) - the approach to the town from Junction 32 of the M62 Motorway and Skinner Lane.
The proposed development has been designed in the context of creating a sustainable, inclusive and integrated community which is at the heart of national policy guidance.
The proposal will result in the redevelopment of a highly sustainable previously developed site to produce a mixed use sustainable urban extension to Pontefract close to existing public transport links and with a bus route proposed through the site. The proposal will promote the use of public transport, walking and cycling and a reduced reliance on the private car. This is fully in line with national, regional and local policy and guidance.
